Businesses nowadays are getting harder to manage as advancements in technology and a fast-paced lifestyle has shaped the way businesses are run. It created a new breed of professionals to take on the challenge of this online world. Virtual Assistants are the key to the success of online businesses as they provide immediate and efficient assistance to online businesses. To become a successful Virtual Assistant, one must possess the following skills:

1. Organizational Skills.

A virtual assistant must be well-organized in handling clients’ information and documents. You must be able to input information in an organized and efficient manner for easy and quick access to clients’ information. Time matters in this line of work, and you do not want to waste your clients’ time, which can endanger your relationship.

Additionally, the business will greatly benefit from an organized virtual office. Just like in an actual office where you keep files, handle transactions and interact with clients, a virtual office also needs to possess such characteristic. Clients must have their own file folders, and each aspect of the business must likewise have its own set of folders for quick reference and easy access.

2. Word Processing Skills.

Most online businesses depend on quality content to succeed in the field. As a virtual assistant, you must be able to process data efficiently and accurately. The job may require you to perform data entry and typing tasks and it is important to accomplish them quickly and without any mistakes. Strive to improve your typing speed and accuracy in processing data. Moreover, knowledge in using word processing tools such as MS Word is a must.

3. Computer Skills.

Nowadays, everything is done on a computer. It is the one essential machine required to get work done in the office. As a virtual assistant, I cannot stress more the importance of possessing computer skills. Although you cannot master every program, start with using word processing and spreadsheet programs and then learn to use other programs available to you and which may be required in the job.

4. Communication Skills.

Every business communicates in words, whether verbal or written. It thrives when these forms of communication are harnessed in an advantageous manner. A good virtual assistant must be able to communicate effectively with clients and other personnel. It is important that every instruction is understood perfectly to avoid making mistakes. Also, it is a great way to forge relationships with clients and co-workers.

5. Internet savvy

Having knowledge of the internet is a must for every virtual assistant. To be able to communicate with clients, the internet is the fastest and most effective form of communication. The internet is also a great resource for relevant information and a means to gather updates related to the business.

6. Motivated.

Working as a virtual assistant entails the freedom to work independently and with minimal supervision. To be effective, one must be motivated to get the job done efficiently and in a timely manner. Motivation is the driving force that will wake you up every morning and get you ready to accomplish important tasks. It motivates you to do your best in any task and to fight the urge to procrastinate whenever possible. Motivated individuals produce results and have higher chances of succeeding in the job.

7. Willingness to learn.

Most virtual assistants shy away from tasks that they are not familiar with. It makes them feel incompetent whenever introduced to new technology or software, and this lessens their confidence. What every virtual assistant should realize is that everybody undergoes this period in their professional career. To be able to keep up, one must be willing to learn new things and take on the challenge of utilizing new knowledge to improve and become more efficient in the job.

To become a successful virtual assistant, one must endeavor to possess most, it not all, of the seven most important skills discussed in this article. Despite having all of the above skills, it does not guarantee success without hard work and commitment. One must have a strong desire to succeed, coupled with values that are equally important for every employee to possess, such as integrity and dedication. If you want to succeed in this business, strive to possess these important skills. Learn them as you work and improve over time.

Tips to Finding an Online Job

23 May

Many young graduates are searching for online jobs. With the availability of computer and affordable internet services (Smart Broadband/ Globe/ Sun Cellular) here in the Philippines, almost everyone wants to work at home.

Of course, there are a lot of jobs out there on the internet that offer flexible schedules at high pay. Seems like the perfect job.

I was one of those who wanted that kind of job. And so I was hired by an international SEO company. They offered me a nice pay, $600 to be exact. I started immediately, eager to impress my employers. I spent about a week inside my room, only going outside to eat or to use the bathroom.

As it turned out, the job was too hard for me, even with my previous experience as a technical writer. The job was just too tough – imagine I had to produce eight articles per day and submit them for guest posting to websites I had to contact.

Yes, some of you can do it, of course. But for me, I was shocked because I never expected it to be too tough for me. I was too confident with my ability to write technical papers, I didn’t expect that I would find it hard to write an article within just an hour.

I’m not saying that you should not try it. If, in your assessment, you can do the job, then by all means, I encourage you to apply. I admire people who can do that. There are a lot of websites that offer online jobs but beware, there are a lot of scams, too.

So, what happened next? I quit. Yes, I quit the job in just after a week of sleepless nights. It was that hard!

For those who really want to apply for an online job, here’s my advice:

  • Always check the job requirements. If you have the right skills, send out your resume to their email address provided.
  • Always follow instructions. Online employers usually have instructions for applicants to ensure that only those who know how to follow detailed instructions will get through.
  • Submit application to as many employers as possible.
  • Prepare for the usual interview questions ahead of time. When your application is accepted, the employer may set up an interview. So you will have your answers ready when that happens.

These are my tips for now. If you have more to add, feel free to comment. I would really appreciate new insights for this topic. 🙂
